Adding .htAcess password to admin

This morning I just installed oscommerce for the first time. I am still in the learning process of all of this stuff and do not yet understand how you would go about password protecting my admin directory. I read in the documentation that you can either do it through the server admin panel, we have cpanel but I do not know how to find it there, what to look for, or you can add a .htaccess file, now this sound simple for someone who knows about the files and how they work but I do not. Can anyone help me by either telling me a simple way to do this or the way to make an .htaccess file. Thank you, Kegan Inman

With cPanel you just need to look for a link called something like Password Protect or Directory Protection --> select the folder you want to protect --> the .ht files get written for you by cPanel.
