Arrowhead123 Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 Hello, When a customer purchases something, it runs through fedex module that I added. I setup an online account with fedex.com. How will I be able to track the shipping number and who it's being shipped to? Does the module automatically generate a shipping number for me? If so, where can I go to print out the Bill of Lading for the customer and put it on the package? I'm confused about how a shipping number is supposed to be generated so that I can print out a form and put it on a package to drop it off at a drop off location. Thanks!
Guest Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 search the contributions for fedex there are all sort of options http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,2259
Arrowhead123 Posted February 21, 2006 Author Posted February 21, 2006 No no, I think you misunderstood my question. When a customer finishes purchasing an item, and I go to Customers -> Orders -> Invoice, a fedex tracking number is not associated with the item. Isn't the fedex module supposed to assign a tracking number automatically? If not, how do I assign a tracking number to the package I'm about to ship?

Guest Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Seems pretty obvious that it should add the tracking number as a comment to the order. I'm surprised that it does not. I'm interested in finding a solution for an upcoming project if there is not one available.
Arrowhead123 Posted February 23, 2006 Author Posted February 23, 2006 In the admin panel, I go to Customers -> Orders and on an order that someone just bought that is pending, I edit it. Nowhere in the page that is loaded to I see anything about a tracking number. I also checked in the invoice and packing slip buttons, but nothing shows up. The fedex module is set for production, and fedex automatically insered a meter ID after I inserted by account #. I don't understand why nothing is showing up! Guest Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Just to be clear: I'm not saying that the Fedex Real Time Quotes 2.04 shipping module does this. I'm saying that if it doesn't it is unfortunate and should be remedied. Sorry for any confusion.
Arrowhead123 Posted February 23, 2006 Author Posted February 23, 2006 Unfortunately, either I have set something up wrong, or Fedex Real Time Quotes 2.04 doesn't give me a tracking number. Are there any fedex modules out there that give me a quote and also a tracking number? Just to be clear: I'm not saying that the Fedex Real Time Quotes 2.04 shipping module does this. Guest Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 If you look through the code of this shipping module do you see reference to the tracking number anywhere?
mbingham Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 The module only gathers quotes. It is does not do other possibly desirable tasks such as scheduling pickups, nor printing labels, nor assigning tracking numbers. It is only meant to give a workable quote in the cart. I don't have a suggestion for doing those other tasks in an automated manner, but I can say that Fedex documentation is *extremely* detailed and that a module that does some or all of those jobs (if it dosn't already exist) would be very possible. from a fellow user of the module... Isn't the fedex module supposed to assign a tracking number automatically? If not, how do I assign a tracking number to the package I'm about to ship? The Customers -> Orders -> Invoice has nothing to do with Fedex. It covers all orders regardless of shipping. But you could customize it add a tracking field and make the script populate the invoice with the tracking number.
Guest Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Does the Fedex API send back the tracking number upon order? If so, would it be possible to add this tracking number to the existing comment field? I'm hoping that Fedex releases a tracking number when you order the product, not when you actually ship the item. I don't know enough about the module or API to know this for certain. Arrowhead123 Posted February 24, 2006 Author Posted February 24, 2006 Ah, interesting. I always thought that Fedex provided a tracking number upon order. So if that is the case, how do I go about shipping the package if I want to just drop off the packages at a drop off site? How will fedex know to bill me for the package shipments? Do I have to manually go to the site, fill out some kind of form with the customer's address, and then print out that form which hopefully contains the tracking number? If not, how do I do this? Guest Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Arrowhead123- you keep reading things into what I am saying. I never said that I know how this works. I'm asking someone, preferably with development experience with this shipping module, if this is how the order with Fedex works and if so if this functionality can be added.
Arrowhead123 Posted February 24, 2006 Author Posted February 24, 2006 Gsbe, Sorry, I am unclear as to how the Fedex process works also, which is why I asked the above question. The bottom line is this: if this fedex module or any other fedex module does not insert a tracking number, it means that the tracking number must come from the shipping process. I'm wondering how I go about getting that tracking number: do I have to go to the fedex site and do that myself? I don't know, so I put this post: Ah, interesting.
