osCommerce

The e-commerce.

I'm at the point of giving up and deleting oscommerce as I really cannot understand some things and there doesn't seem to be any answers anywhere. I posted for help on the shipping modules a few days ago but didn't get any replies. I have since figured some things out for myself, but am still stuck on others, such as:

1. How do you add a contribution to your setup? I am thinking here of the UK Counties/zones - I've downloaded it and it says to append it to the mysql_catalog.sql file - I cannot find that file anywhere, let alone know how to append it.

2. Having more than one zone - I managed to set up 3 tax zones that I needed: 1. UK; 2. Europe; 3. Rest of World, but it seems I'm only allowed to use one zone in shipping and payment.

3. Just as a matter of interest, why doesn't the default 'all zones' work within a county that you have to add them for each and every state/province/county?

Ok, moan over, but I really would appreciate some help, preferably put in simple terms. If it is that complicated, can anyone recommend an alternative that is easier to use please?

Don't give up just yet. :) There is a steep learning curve to oscommerce but, if you stick with it, you will eventually understand. Many contributions require a change be made to your database. To do that, you will need to upload a file using phpmyadmin, which is a program that is usually available in your hsots control panel. This thread exaplins how to do that.

Sorry I'm not answering your questions but I can give some advice on how to get them answered.

When you post on the forum you need to be more specific about your questions. I find topic per post is enough. Be descriptive in you topic heading and description as that will give users of the forums an idea what you are looking for. If no one answers your question you can try by posting more details about your problem.

I find when I follow these rules I usually get the help I need.

Backup before making changes. Backup before making changes! Backup before making changes!!

You did do a backup? eh?

I know what you're saying but for someone like me that doesn't have much idea about it to begin with, it's hard to be really specific. First I had to learn what a contribution was!

Tutorials such as the one Jack led me to are the best way for me to grasp something and probably for many others too. It's a shame there isn't somewhere where they can be grouped together as a reference point.... like a Numpties Guide. I'm sure my problems are not that uncommon and it would save the kind people here from having to answer the same or similar questions over and over again.

Anyway, thanks for replying and for the advice :)
