New to osCommerce, Unresolved Parse Error Problem

I was attempting to replace the "osCommerce" title tag that is displayed at the top of my browser. I found what I believed to be the correct file in includes/languages/english.php. I made the following changes to the following files:

In the includes/languages/english.php file

// page title

define('TITLE', 'osCommerce'); I changed the osCommerce to the business name.

To the index.php file I added

<meta name="keywords" content="....> and

<meta name="description" content=".....> to the head portion of the file.

To the includes/header.php

"><?php echo '<a href="' . tep_href_link(FILENAME_DEFAULT) . '">' . tep_image(DIR_WS_IMAGES . 'oscommerce.gif', 'company name') . '</a>'; ?>

After getting this error: Parse error: parse error in /var/www/html/includes/languages/english.php on line 79

I attempted to return each file to its original state.

In addition to the error message, all the Headings appear as 'HEADER_TITLE_CREATE_ACCOUNT' rather than "Creat an Account" and so on.

The url of the website is www.copperlawnsprinkler.com if you want to see what I'm trying to describe.

I have a "little" knowledge of php and was making a few minor changes to this site for a friend. Now I'm really in a bind.

Originally, I was using the file manager to edit the files. I have tried downloading the files and re-uploading but the problems remain.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

After getting this error: Parse error: parse error in /var/www/html/includes/languages/english.php on line 79

You shouldn't need to replace files - the error message does tell you where the bug is:

/var/www/html/includes/languages/english.php on line 79

Go to the file & line and see what's there. The entry should be in this format (and take care with apostrophes, commas and brackets - they all matter).

define('BOX_HEADING_MANUFACTURERS', 'My text goes here');

If still stuck, please poste line 79 of that file so we can see it & suggest a solution - luckily the error message is quite specific, so hopefully somebody on the forum can help!

all the best! edith

PS: could just be me - but I don't trust the file manager and always use a FTP program. I'm on Ipswitch but I've heard that the free FileZilla is also quite good - nothing worse than uploading corrupted files!

Just spoke with Vger - looks like the issue is a bit bigger than just one line!

Okay - the lovely osCom filemanager apparently strips out all backslashes in text in front of apostrophes (the "don\'t thingies" - and these are VITAL for PHP to work correctly!

At this stage it's okay to panic at bit ....

After a glass of wine, try this:

1) get yourself a FPT program (FileZilla, Ipswitch ....). Ipswitch costs around ?30 and is well worth the cash.

2) overwrite the files you've been working on with standard osCom pages

3) re-do your changes & upload with FPT program

Always - back up all files first in case anything goes wonky. And apparently - don't use Filemanager! Vger said that the error message only prints the FIRST error, so chances are, there are more, hence my recommendation to start with clean, standard osCom pages - either that, or hunt each error down in each file you've worked on with Filemanager.

Have another glass of wine, and hopefully relax!

all the best with your site! edith
