osCommerce counting mechanism

i was wondering what tells osCommerce how to count. what i mean is, its default counting mechanism is like the old windows way where it would count 100 and 1000 as the same thing when it comes down to sorting. i might not make sense to most people so let me just use my example. my product 101 and 1001 are right next to each other in other words if you dont put a 0 before a 3 digit number a 4 digit number will be considered the same thing. in mathamatical terms, it places the decimal point before a number and not after a number. windows xp has fixed this in explorer's sorting function. anyone?
