Strange Locations of files and permissions issues

A colleague of mine recently installed OsCommerce on our site and everything appeared to work ok. However there are problems with paths and as a result permissions.

For example on the server the files are stored in (checked via ftp):

/home/sites/ourcompany/web/catalogue/

Where as OsCommerce gives errors saying that it cannot backup files to another directory "anotherpath":

/homes/sites/anotherpath/web/catalogue/admin/backups

This is despite the fact Oscommerce is definately set up and runs from the correct path, the first one.

Also when editing files from within the admin system I am able to view the file, then when I try to edit it the same strange location issues emerge and I get errors like:

Error Error: I can not write to this file. Please set the right user permissions on:

/homes/sites/anotherpath/web/catalogue//index.php

The result of the current situation is that I cannot edit and save any files, although the test site works almost prefectly. So its all rather annoying.

I would be grafeful for advice people can offer.

Kind regards,

P.S. Maybe it`s a good idea to reread osCommerce manual one more time?
