you could change the catalog\index.php checking for the category ID and if it is the one where a different layout is needed include a different module for it instead of the default listing code.

look in the catalog\index.php

 

This is where the categories/subcategories are listed

 

  if ($category_depth == 'nested') {

 

So say you have category with ID 10 you want to present differently.

 

if( $current_category_id == 10 ) {
include(DIR_WS_MODULES . FILENAME_SPECIFIC_LISTING);
} else {
// original code here
}
