i suspect i would have to make a separate database call to the address_book, but can anyone clue me in on how to do so?

could i just add entry_suburb to the c.customer_firstname keyword line?

In admin->customers.php look for the line:

$search = "where c.customers_lastname like '%" . $keywords . "%' or c.customers_firstname like '%" . $keywords . "%' or c.customers_email_address like '%" . $keywords . "%'";

You can add any other fields to search - for example, I have:

$search = "where c.customers_lastname like '%" . $keywords . "%' or c.customers_firstname like '%" . $keywords . "%' or c.customers_email_address like '%" . $keywords . "%' or a.entry_street_address like '%" . $keywords . "%' or a.entry_suburb like '%" . $keywords . "%' or a.entry_postcode like '%" . $keywords . "%' or a.entry_city like '%" . $keywords . "%' or a.entry_state like '%" . $keywords . "%' or c.customers_group_name like '%" . $keywords . "%' or a.entry_company like '%" . $keywords . "%'";

Which searches pretty much all of the customer address fields.
