How to stop copycats

Guest

Recommended Posts

Hi

Does anyone know how to stop copycats, or document that images, texts etc is copied from my store?

My wife started a store 6 months ago, and now it seems that a person is copying pictures and texts from my store and using them in their own. Shes even posted ads in my forum to steal my customer base.

All the prices are ofcourse $1 lower than mine.

How can I stop this?

I've tried to reason with the owner of the other store, but no luck there, all I get in reply is that I cannot prove that anyting is copied.

I have a logfile that shows the IP address of the other store, and it seems that the regular customers are not listed here, is this proofe?

Hope anyone can help.....

You could try putting your shop name on the images, like this shop:

http://www.mollyanns.com/catalog/product_i...roducts_id=1080

More deviously, replace the current pictures with a pic saying "This shop steals images" or something; upload new pics into your site with different names.

If you have control over your server, look into a filter that will stop requests for *.gif or *.jpg from any domain other than your own. Try:

http://www.uk-dave.com/bytes/misc/referer-check.php

http://underscorebleach.net/jotsheet/2004/...htaccess-apache

http://www.thesitewizard.com/archive/bandwidththeft.shtml

for more info.

Besides putting text on your pictures, there is no way to stop people from getting what they want. There are browser's out there that show you the source code, even on one's that are blocked. "Source Browsers" can easily be found and downloaded.

I have seen sites that won't even let you right click. You get a copyright error. Does anyone know how to do that?

Thanks

why don't you just ip ban her via htaccess? if she keeps coming back, ban her entire range/isp .. though doing the range/isp you risk losing legitimate visitors

HI

If they are hotlinking to your images e.g they are downloading the images from your website ( so they Don't even have the decency to use their own hosting) then you can do a few things

If they are hotlinking then I would take my time and do the following

If you want to just stop them I would look at your hosting you will probably have Hotlink Protection where you can stop your images being downloaded to an other website

If you watermark your images ( their is a Contab for this I believe) This will stop them using any new images,

The more fun option would be to make copies of your images and then change with watermark and upload to new folder/directory and get them showing on your website, Then with the old Images in the old image folder which is showing On the FAKE website you just swap the old images for something well.... More offensive Be that porn or images saying " They are a 3 nipple cousin Fxxxxx " so that they get shown on the other website ( this only works if they are hot linking to your images)

Right clicks can be circumvents by anyone who has Half a clue and Ips can be faked or they use a 3 rd party PC

If they are stealing your text and it was Copyright text e.g. you have wrote it your self , you could try the threat of legal action get a lawyer to send out a nice letter to the Website owner and their Hosting company ( You can easily prove that your text pre dates theirs by using something like Alexia to show you what the website looked like in the past)

I supply Hosting and I know when I get a letters from a lawyer it doesn't take much for me to react to a an offending website and deal with it there and then

Try approaching their web host and explaining to them sometime they can be sympathic and help you out

Hope this helps

Hi

Thanks for all the good answers.

I will change all the images to include my store name, that was a good idea.

I think it also gives kind of a professional look to it.

The people stealing is not hot linking, they just save the pictures and upload them to their own store.

I have reported the IP address to the ISP, and they said they would block the user from entering my site.

Does anyone know how to install the no right click, and disallow that explorer popup save to thing?

That would atleast stop the amateures.

Try to use this script - worked fine on my site. Good luck.

<!-------------------------Disables Right Click---------------------------------->

<script language=JavaScript>

<!--

//Disable right mouse click Script

//By Maximus ([email protected]) w/ mods by DynamicDrive

//For full source code, visit http://www.dynamicdrive.com

var message="Function Disabled!";

///////////////////////////////////

function clickIE4(){

if (event.button==2){

alert(message);

return false;

}

}

function clickNS4(e){

if (document.layers||document.getElementById&&!document.all){

if (e.which==2||e.which==3){

alert(message);

return false;

}

}

}

if (document.layers){

document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN);

document.onmousedown=clickNS4;

}

else if (document.all&&!document.getElementById){

document.onmousedown=clickIE4;

}

document.oncontextmenu=new Function("alert(message);return false")

// -->

</script>

I would add my store name or website to each picture. If you use paint shop pro or something like that you can make a little logo and put it in there or make the text transparent so that there is no way it can be removed without destroying the image. Then you can get a copyright on your site which would include the images. At that point any sites with your protected property you can do a whois on the site to find who is hosting it and tell them that one of their customers is illegally using copyrighted material.

At that point the hosting service should contact the copycat and tell them to remove the material or their site will be shut down or may possably take them to court if the issue is bad enough.

An intelligent person can easilly bypass the right click script, and some of those ways can be protected as well but ultimatly anything that shows up on a screen can be aquired one way or another.

Having your material copyrighted puts the sword in your hands to have the host of the site cut them off at the knees if they violate the law. :D

Also some of your graphic editing programs allow you to edit author information into the file so when someone else pulls it up an a program the file info will say who made it. All someone would have to do to prove it would be to download the file off the site and view the info, if it has someone else name on it their busted.

Edit: look like that was already said, sorry.
