.htaccess and password

I installed OSC to my public_html/cart using Fantastico. After getting the common register_globals error, I followed people's suggestions and edited the register_global value in .htaccess

Now, when I execute configure.php, I got the following error:

"Authorization Required

This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

I can see my cart/admin is password protected from File Manager.

Under the Cart directory, the .htaccess has the following statements:

" php_value session.use_trans_sid 0

php_value register_globals 1"

And under Cart/admin directory, I have two files: .htaccess and .htaccess2

.htacess2 has the same statements as above, and .htacess has statements below:

"AuthUserFile "/home/user/.htpasswds/cart/admin/passwd

require valid-user"

When I call on index.php, I still get "Server Requirement Error: register_globals is disabled in your PHP configuration. This can be enabled in your php.ini configuration file or in the .htaccess file in your catalog directory."

As you can tell, I'm new to OSC and php and really need some help to figure out how to proceed. Am I executing the right file? Did I need to start over again?
