internal server error on check out

I am having a "500" internal server error page" every time I (as a client) try to access a downloadable product already paid for (or free) after getting passed all the checking out process.


Searched the forums and tried a few things:


removing the .htaccess file in catalog/

changing permissions...

with no results.


The error server log gives me a different message for the same situation each time!?


Can anyone help?
