Pls 'Elp! Database update question!

Recommended Posts

Hello clever peoples!

Any help or pointers would be appreciated! Here it is:

I have a osCom site that's online and working - and an another that's offline. I use the offline replica to test contribs and update product info, etc. Now, as my site gets busy, I don't want to take it down while I drop and re-create the mySQL DB. (this is what I'm doing at the moment... But of course I'd lose customer accounts, etc...) How should I be doing this? I'm not a DB guru I'm afraid, but can work my way around without breaking things...

Do I need to do everything online? Do I do partial DB updates? Please could someone shine some light on this for me!

Thanks & kind regards,

You can do partial updates to your database. Simply make a SQL dump file with the statements that affect only tables you will be making changes to. If you're making changes to an existing table, chances are you're adding to it. Therefor an ALTER statement that only adds fields to a table will not harm your data. It really depends on the changes you're making.
