Hack 'What's New' module to a 'Any Random Product'

Hi Guys and Gals:

I would love to make the 'What's New' in the left column select random products from my entire inventory - or at least choose a broader selection than the last nine products I've added to the store. I know the answer may be on the boards but my search terms are not finding what I need.
