Go to maximum values in the configuration box of your admin and change the manufacturer list number to something higher than the amount of manufactures you have on your site. I think this will change it from a dropdown to a list. The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing. Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems?
