cfisher Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Hello, I am new to the world of e-commerce and OSCommerce. If I own a business that wants to sell online and accept credit card payments (not through paypal) will I be able to if I set myself up as a merchant and use OSCommerce to accept credit cards (VISA, MC, etc.. )? If yes then is there a certain merchant or gateway service suggested by OSCommerce? and what is involved in setting up OSCommerce to to accept credit cards with my merchant accout? As simple of a question as this probably is, it is also important to me (and I'm sure other beginners) in the world of e-commerce. Any comments/ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.
hubcat Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Yes, OSC will allow you to accept credit cards from a merchant account outside of paypal. In e-commerce, merchant accounts are a 2-step process. There is a "gateway" company that takes the info over the net and then the actual merchant bank. Most gateways have several merchant banks that they work with and vice versa. If you go to your Admin -> Modules -> Payments, you can see the list of gateways that OSC already has in place. Authorize.net, 2CheckOut, PSIGate, etc. But if you look in contributions, you will also find a much wider range of gateways that can be used and some upgrades to the current gateways. The technical side of getting the merchant account set up is not that difficult, but it's extremely important to make sure you get a merchant bank that you are happy with. I made the mistake of not reading all of the *very* fine print from my merchant bank, and I definitely am regretting it! Authorize.net is working great for me, though. Good luck, Adrienne

Good luck, Adrienne Thank you for the lesson/advice. Also, I will look into Authorize.net but have you ever used e-onlinedata.com? I was thinking of going with them due to the fact that I will probably do hosting with Lunar Pages and they seem to push e-onlinedata.com as being a good gateway source for merchants.
