Backup and migration to new domain

Hi,

I want to change my domain name as I have just been using a old domain I owned but have bought a new one. Anyway my ISP will, without charge, keep my hosting with 5 SQL databases and remove the old domain and put up the new one. But they will need to reset the account and I will loose all my files.

So I obviously have all my php files and can reinstall OScommerce ect....

But is downloading a backup and restoring it on the new insallation going to be enough? I have never needed to restore. Are there going to be table problems in the database or anything?

Can you please let me know of any problems you can forsee with the way I have to do it. Ideally I would set up a new domain get it working and shut the other one down but it will be cheaper this way.

Many thanks

Hi alibaabaa,

You are cetrainly on the right step in terms of your preparation. Just make sure you back up:

1.) You source files (all files including images etc. )

2.) Your Database Structure and Data.

What you may need to do after you move your stuff to it's new domian name, run a Find and Replace on all your files and replace the references to your old domain name with the new one.

Most important "Ensure you back up all your Data"

Hello all, this is topic is exactly what I was going to ask, cool... I had my store crash and burn on me last month and I lost everything. I am starting to get it back to where it was but I am deathly afraid of it happening again. Of course, when it crashed I had no backups. Just to make sure I got the backup stuff right, all that needs to be done is save the BACKUP file to the computer and then FTP the entire store onto the computer and thats it? Right? So let's say that my store crashes and I have the backup. All I need to do is FTP the backup store onto the server and then restore my BACKUP file? THanks for your help.

Before the change backup your database using the backup in your osC admin, then ftp all your files to your local computer.

After the Domain change

1. go to your hosting control panel and create database and user making sure you assign user to database

2. populate database using last backup that you made

3. make changes to your two configure.php files changing the database info and domain info to match new info.

4. ftp all files to your server

5. You will need to make any changes to your language files and maybe your logo to match your new domain.

The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing.

Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems?

There are many very useful osC Contributions

Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here

BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right??
