Digital Downloads Store

Hi,

 

I'm planning to create a store for digital downloads only. It will have e-books, music, audiobooks. The music section and audiobooks can span multiple cds. For those who already sell digital goods, what is your approach to build such store ? I'd like the user to be abe to buy 1 audiobook that can span multiple CDs. Selling single songs, per album without creating duplicate items (ie 1-x songs, and another zip for full album, etc).

Which mods/contrib have you installed to manage the contents ? Any tips & tricks appreciated.

You do not really need anything special, although we use the downloads controller contribution which allows you some control over how soon your customer receives the file. I've also done some extensive modifications to osC on this particular site.

 

I completely modified the way products are listed, etc and added an attribute for a sample file for each product. I also performed a hack so that the customer has their own digital locker which was actually already there somewhat by default, however added the ability to add files to a customer's "locker" from the admin console. Comes in handy for customer service issues.

 

Some day my intentions are to clean some of those things up so that they may be submitted as contributions, I'm just waiting for days to be changed to 25 hours, then I'll be set :)

As of the moment, Oscommerce download abilities are limited to single items. Say as a single song and not albums (unless you're using a zip file - sucks) or a mix and match of different songs over different albums like iTunes. But fear not for a new version of Master Products will be released in a few weeks that will allow just that. THe ability to mix and match different songs and items (as on my store). It will definitely be a boon to those looking to build digital stores..

I am not sure if Master Products is the same as Master/Slave but you definitely need soemthing like Master/Slave to handle this kind of thing.

Yes it;s the same. The original version was geared more toward physical items... the new one will have download specific features...

When will the new version of master products be available? There are many postings ranging from a couple of days to a few weeks!

 

In the meantime could anyone help me here. I have installed the master products and download controller. All works well without any problems. Downloads work fine on an individual basis but when I add downloadable products to a master product they do not appear once I have paid (single downloads do). Anything I am missing here?

Mediajuggle: Any update on when the new version will be available? We're working on our site using the existing version and will need to make this version work if the new version isn't coming out very soon.

 

trevwilson: We're in the same boat you are. if you purchase a slave product (one track individually) the download works, but if you purchase the master you don't get a download link. we're pretty convinced that downloads.php has got to be edited to make this work. there is no file associated with the master, so downloads.php doesn't see a file to present. it needs to find the files associated with the slaves when you purchase the master, and present those files for download. I'm just not sure exactly how to make that happen.
