custom home page

I have pearlwear.com, which uses default.php as the home page. When I click on any of the categories, it still shows them in default.php with a paramter cPath with the appropriate category id. When I make changes to the home page, of course it propagates to all the category pages as well.

 

How can I avoid this? Ideally, the home page will be unique and the category page template will be different than the home page.

 

I searched the forums, contribs, and the web, but have not found an easy or ready-made way of doing this.
