how to show specials & not new products

I have a shop that is tweeked quite abit. I did not do most of the tweeking. I now have a"problem" that I can't figure out. I will post the code below.

What is happening now is when you go to the index.php page the featured items are shown. however, the items listed as featured are simply the newest items added to the store. Is there a way to have that section removed and simply replace those items with the items marked as specials?

I am also having problems with the subcategories. If someone would like to help me with this one I would be forever greatful. The way the code is set up, The main categories are shown and the sub categories are shown. However, If I have :

Category

--Subcategory

----Products

all of the products in that subcategory are shown BUT...If I have:

Category

--Subcategory

----Sub-Subcategory

------Products

I cannot get to the Sub-Subcategory or its products unless I do a specific search for one of those products.

I want to be able somehow show those categories....Any thoughts?

Just a thought. Try changing this:

 <?php include(DIR_WS_MODULES . FILENAME_NEW_PRODUCTS); ?>

to this:

 <?php include(DIR_WS_BOXES . FILENAME_SPECIALS); ?>

The formatting may be (probably is) different due to the specials being an infoBox, but maybe you can copy the specials infoBox code into a specials module file and tweak the layout. Like I said, just a thought.
