Products to display under main categories

Greetings all,

 

I am trying to get the left column to show only main categories and the associated products directly under it. For example, I want the product list to display under the main categories, exactly as the sub-categories do already.

 

What I'm trying to do is to be able to click on the left column, and get taken directly to the product info page based on the product I click on. Again, this would be a link that would reside under a main category (not sub-category) in the left column. If anyone would be so generous as to enlighten my coding skills to reach this challenge, I would be most grateful.
