VirtueMart jumping ship to osCommerce, maybe

Hi All,

I am setting up an ecommerce and CMS site, which is currently running on joomla+virtueMart. I love how these who are integrated, however it has become apparent to me since implementing, that virtueMart is somewhat lacking behind osCommerce in many ways such as invoicing, shipping modules, etc. Also their forums are DEAD, there are hundreds of posts asking questions and no-one answers them.

I am very seriously considering changing over to joomla+osCommerce but I am a little confused how I should go about this, I see that currently there is a bridge to share accounts between osCOmmerce and Joomla which is great, but then there is also this josCommerce which sounds fantastic and the way to go, but they haven't made a release yet and I don't know if I wait for this to happen or just go with the bridge option.

Also there is the concern that osCommerce won't integrate with my joomla templates, which I have spent a long time creating, I am guessing josCommerce will though ???

I have same problem, I like virtuemart but community is totally dead and it is totally impossible to get any support at all.

The problem is I have already a lot of work done, hundred of categories and thousands of products... You know if there is an easy way to move that data to OsCommerce or jOsCommerce?

Hi Benneh

How did this go? i'm thinking i might have to move from Joomla/virtuemart to Joomla/oscommerce because i want to use hsbc and it isn't working very well in virtuemart, so would like to find out what problems you ran into....if any!

cheers

I gave up on josCommerce, they never seemed to make one proper release, and what was available in the CSV was totally non functioning. The project appears to have nose dived. Shame because it sounded like it has potential.

I ended up sticking with joomla/virtuemart, and even contributing some code which is now part of the core distribution. I discovered the forums for osC are less active that the joomla ones. I also after playing with osC found out why all osC shops looks the same... it's so damn hard to change the appearance, and will likely break most plugins that it just isn't worth it. Changing the appearance requires hacks on most files, and whenever any updates are released it would be a nightmare merging the changes.

Joomla/VirtueMart has been great for me.

...and

not all Osc shops look the same. There are a lot us running stores that break out of the traditional oscommerce mold.

I think the majority people leave the oscommerce look because they lack the skills to make sweeping changes or they actually like the standard look....

yep thanks for the link on the osC-joomla bridge. It is a great project, but it still doesn't help with the skinning aspect. I honestly feel this is the biggest differentiator between virtuemart and osCommerce. with virtuemart the look and layout can be radically changed with ease and templates don't require you to modify and core files like they do in osC.

I doubt most lack the skills to change oscommerce looks, someone who knows html and css alone could probably figure it out without understanding most of the php, it's more they lack the effort to hack the core files and then have to merge them everytime there are patches or plugins.

Like the standard look  sorry but it's pretty darn horrible from the perspective of good web design.

can't argue with you there. It is very time consuming but I hear version 3 is supposed to have templating features....

if and when it's ever released...

Why not try the oscommerce and joomla combination available at www.vxd-hosting.co.za
