How do I make graphics for and insert them into the infobox headers?

Hi,

I would like to replace the stock headers at the top of each of my infoboxes and the main navigation header and footer, basically all of them. I am talking about the colored areas behind the spot at the top of each box and the main header and footer. For example behind the links that say my account/cart contents/checkout, and behind shopping cart, reviews, quick find, manufacturers, etc.... I would like to leave the text overlaying them if possible.

I am trying to achieve something like this: example

How would I go about doing this? With what programs would I create the graphics, or are they available for download somewhere already pre-made? If I have to make them what should their dimensions be for the different locations?

Once the graphics are inserted how do you get the corner graphics to match?

Lastly what is the correct method to insert the graphics? I am sure it will be a stylesheet edit, could someone tell me exactly what these edits would be?

Thank you for any help,

Mike
