minuteman1970 Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 I just recently added credit card payment to my OSc store, and would like to add SSL security. I did a little research on the web, and found cert pricing ranges from about $15 per year to several hundred $$ per year. I would like to keep costs low, but still offer SSL to my customers. Two of the cheaper SSL deals out there which I found are: www.litessl.com ($15 per year), and www.godaddy.com ($18 per year). Can anyone tell me if purchasing from either of these two SSL providers is worthwhile? Any other suggestions? thanks in advance.

Before making a ssl cert purchase I would contact your hosting company. They may have a shared cert on your server that you can use free, they may offer a package that includes the install and the ip address you are going to need to use the cert. If nothing else you will need to find out what the cost of getting the cert setup on your site is going to be. While not having used certs from either of those companies I know that godaddy sells a lot of them. The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing. Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems? There are many very useful osC Contributions Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right??
strced Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 Take a look at this http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=151162 . The less expensive certs (chained certificates) are fine as long as the root is already pre-installed in the browsers you think your customers will be using.
Guest Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 HI there... Let me point out to you that you can get a FREE 3 Month chained SSL certificate from ipsCA in their 'testing' program http://certs.ipsca.com/ Yes, it's a marketing thing, they are doing, but when we saw one of our providers was selling their SSL certs, we looked 'inside and found that we can get a "testing cert" for 3 months for free to see if it works with our shop. Answer after testing on a real shop? Yes, it works fine in osC! It looks and behaves identically to the one you buy. They write: IpsCA root certificate is present in more than 98% of today?s browsers Internet Explorer, Mozilla and Firefox Well... It certainly works in ours and we are floating 20 languages. We got our provider to generate a key, got it by email and sent it in to ipsCA using their online application. We got 'approved' in about an hour (on a weekend, too), sent it back to the provider and they installed it. We have nothing but good things to say about the ipsCA SSL certificate! Good Luck....that's what we found, for what it's worth. Their certs work in osC and the 3 Month Free Trial for testing is generous. No...We don't sell it; we're just happy using it, and their regular cert is cheapfor what it does and what browsers accept it, a priori...in our market region! Maybe your market has lots of other browsers, but ours is mostly IE + a heavy uptake of Firefox (our favorite). B)
