How do I set permissions?

I just installed osCommerce and the directions (I printed the whole 114 pages) tell me to "set the permissions on /catalog/images directory to 777."

I can locate the file, but how exactly to I set the permissions? Is this something I do in mySQL? Or can it be done from the admin panel?

Thanks!

The easiest way to set permissions is to go to your Web Hosting Control Panel and use the File Manager.

If your site is hosted on an Apache server with a Unix/Linux operating system then you can do it via FTP also. FTP to your site, go to the file, right-click on it and find the CHMOD link.

OK, thanks for that. I right-clicked on the file but I don't know what a CHMOD link is. Under "properties" there is a permissions table which has read/write/execute check boxes for owner/group/all users. I can change the permissions using these check boxes, but I don't see any way to enter the "644" code?

644 is Owner - Read and Write, Group and Users just Read.

777 is Read, Write and Execute for all of them.

Play around with this and you'll understand.
