Problem returning to checkout after account creation

Hoping someone can help me out here. We've gone live but there is a problem with the account creation process during checkout. When you create an account you are returned to the index page rather than the back to the checkout process. This makes the order process confusing and I need to make this as simple for the customers as possible.
