osCommerce Process Concerns

Hi,

I am making a website for a friend's small business. They sell apparrel and he wants to know a few things:

-How does his company get paid?

-Do I need to make an account with Authorize.net and any other payment module?

-How do I setup the shipping method (I know UPS does pickup, would it pick-up the package automatically when the order is processed or do I personally have to contact UPS for a pickup)?

-Should I use a secure connection or is it not necessary?

-Should we charge tax (we think not because it is clothing)?

-Does the UPS Express Box cost me any money?

-How do I get a quote to charge a flat rate that would cover all shipping costs?

I know this may be in some documentation, but I don't know where to start looking and I just want to insure that my company will be safe and secure in selling our products online. Thank you very much!

Your friend needs to start with getting set up with a payment processor, whether that be a regular merchant account through someone like authorize.net or someone like Paypal. Once you have that, it will be your main driver as to whether or not you are require to have a secure connection, what payment modules you use etc.

As far as shipping same thing, you need to look at the shipping companies talk to them find one or more who are a good match for you.

Be well,

How does his company get paid?

He gets paid via whatever payment processor he uses: PayPal, Authorize.net, check, money order, etc.

How do I setup the shipping method (I know UPS does pickup, would it pick-up the package automatically when the order is processed or do I personally have to contact UPS for a pickup)?

There *might* be a contribution that allows for instant notification and auto pickup - not certain about this. Otherwise, your client will have to call his shipper of choice and have them come out and pick up the items to be shipped (typically once a day for all order processed that day).

Should I use a secure connection or is it not necessary?

Typically, a secure connection is used during account login and check out process - so customer knows his info is safe.

Should we charge tax (we think not because it is clothing)?

Not sure why you think clothing is exempt from tax. Typically, you charge tax to those customers who are in the same state as your business. And all other customers do not pay tax. Your client needs to check with his state's Internal Revenue office. If he's in another country - he needs to contact the appropriate office for complete information.

How do I get a quote to charge a flat rate that would cover all shipping costs?

Not sure what you mean by this. If you just want to charge a one-all price to cover all shipping costs, then you just decide which price would be the best overall and use that as a flat rate.

We just assumed that when you buy clothing it isn't taxed because it is necessary or something along those lines. Thank you very much, now I just have to deal with PayPal >_<

The woman on customer service was speaking in her accent and saying sir every 3 words, so hopefully I can work this out. This was me
