desertdog
Im getting alot of 404 errors each month in the web site store. I was told by someone all i have to do is redirect them. I'm really not sure why im getting them in the first place, or to sure on how to go about redirecting them. If anyone could lend me a hand in doing this it would be greatly appreated. Hopefull someone can give me a step by step process on how to do it, im still a lil new at learning this and have alot more learning to do. Also if someone needs to see the site to find out why i get the 404 error just let me know.. TY Desertdog
kwalker
Make certain that all of your pages are actually there. The dreaded "404" error means that the page isn't there or for some reason, the browser can't find it. Also, try to load the page using a different browser. Using the "redirect" method can have a negative effect on your site listings & rankings. Try to avoid it unless the page has actually moved and you want to redirect them to the new page. So you don't get flagged by Google or any others, if you insist on using the "redirect" method, make sure you set it to a number higher than 5 seconds. Guest
firstly, what are the 404's looking for? do you recognize the url? is it something that has never existed? these are two of the main things i ask myself when i see 404's on my site. if #1 is yes - then have you deleted it recently (as in, the past year or two)... if yes, you have nothing to worry about. somebody just followed a dead link if #2 somebody could be either: a) trying to hack your site B) trying to hotlink an image, but copied the incorrect url (with abbreviations or other characters), which would immediately produce a 404. i get lots of those

Someone could have bookmarked a page that is no longer there, and your logs will have that error. Double-check to see what the page name error is for. If your pages are listed in the search engine, but are no longer available, you'll get that error too. GraphicsGuy
Assuming that you find that the 404's are not the result of a problem in your site, then the following contribution will help you redirect them to a custom page that attempts to find items matching words in the url. You can see it in action on my site by going to it and then manually altering the end of the url to something nonexistent. 404 Search Page hth Rule #1: Without exception, backup your database and files before making any changes to your files or database. If so, when I went to it, and changed the index to something else, even the extension, I just get the usual "page cannot be displayed". I made some changes in the apache configuration that must have messed up the custom error page redirection. I will look into that and post again when I have it back working. kwalker
GraphicsGuy, I also meant to tell you that at the very bottom of your index page, to the very left side, there is a letter v there. Thought you should know. GraphicsGuy
Thanks for letting me know about the "v" I took care of that easily. The problem with the error doc contrib is puzzling me though. It was working beautifully the last time I gave it a thought. But since them I have restored the server and upgraded the operating system, the control panel and made changes in mod security. I have wasted the whole morning working on it to no avail. All I can say is the contribution was working well and it is very easy to install/unistall and it was working well for me before. You may want to try it out. I will work on mine some more when I have some time and post what I find out when I get it working.
