Hi, please have a look at my site Meccanoman, its going live tommorrow at 12. Spent ages on it because its my fist site (plus the 2000 photos to take and edit). All feedback welcome positive or otherwise.

Many thanks to all the help from the forum and the creators of oscommerce and the (many) contributions i've used.

Cheers

Aw come on now, surely someone must have some comment to make its been three days!!. I know its not that bad because we are already getting the orders in!

Maybe its too boring or something boo sob! :(

SIte looks pretty good. It still looks like an oscommerce site but you have maded some nice modifacations. You might want to organize your subcatagories differently.About the colours. They comeup pink and green on my laptop. Is that what you want?

One little detail. I noticed in the meccanno parts category they don't seem to be organized in any particular way. I think overall you have done a good job.

Backup before making changes. Backup before making changes! Backup before making changes!!

You did do a backup? eh?

Hi Mike thank you very much for your comments.

I quite like the Oscommerce design and retained the layout, Always figured if its ok for amazon, ebuyer, play etc then its probably ok for me. The other design brief was to keep it as simple as possible as our customers are not all very computer savy! I was hoping that with all the other changes it looked sufficiantly different from stock Oscommerce.

The categories are ordered by their importance, so under parts for instance strips and girders are the most frequently ordered products so they come first in the list.

Your worrying me with the bit about it being pink and green, it should definately be red and green (this the old meccano colour scheme) all of the computers I've seen so far show red!

In regards to your PM'd question about the extra information pages. I used this contribution MS2 HTML WYSIWYG Editor, Product Desc, Email + which allows (among other things) the main page to be changed from admin. You can (after a bit of fiddling) use the code to make new pages linked to a html editor in admin. Fiddly but worth it cos any time you want to make a change its just plain old html.

Hope this helps

Cheers

So how did it go? Any orders yet?

I'm not a big fan of that stock "Welcome guest, sign in" line -- if it were me, I'd get rid of it, especially since you have "sign in" and "sign out" in the header anyway. The space you've given to the information links in the center could probably be put to better use too. If you move those below and take out the sign in line, you could move the category photos front and center -- right where a shopper will see them.

For those that aren't familiar with Meccano, it might be helpful to put an image in the header, something representative that would spur immediate recognition.

Overall, a nice site. Just a little adjustment layout-wise and you'll be all set. Good job. :)

I like it, but I'd change the image link tabs at the top so that the tab is green for the page you are actually on.

Reminded me a bit of Amazon, which can't be a bad thing! All your links seem to work as well which always helps.

See my profile for our main OSCommerce site. My views are not necessarily the views of my employer.

I almost like it lol. Don't like the pink at all. The green and yellow play very nicely off of each other but the pink is to... I don't know. Just doesn't play nice with the other two colors lol. Might find a friendlier color for the yellow/green which again I have to say I like the way they play off each other. Very complimentary.

Thanks for your replies chaps.

LOL I still think its red! But I think I've been comprehensively outvoted so I'll darken the icons up in the near futue.

Soon I'll be revamping the mainpage with a newer version of sts. The older version I use doesnt let you run php in the template so Im stuck with an OScid on some buttons even when cokkies are working. When I do the new main page I will take your comments into account Doremus.

Weve had over 30 orders so far so Im quite happy with the way things are going.

Does any one have any advice about getting it listed on Google properly. I've already installed the header tag contribution but so far its only listing the main page. On MSN its lists a fair number of the products so is there anything I should be doing or does it just take time?

Thanks again for your comments.

Google is hard to predict! I have had equal sites that google crawled and the listing we not updated for months.

I did notice a slight spelling error on http://www.meccanoscene.co.uk/ site.. BEING third word in. At first I wondered if this may be a German site.. but I was able to understand the rest of it ;)

Good Work, (I myself see no OSC in it, very original)

Jason
