Hi all,

Im really new to OSC but familiar with HTML and working with Dream Weaver and Frontpage but what im trying to do now is install OSC onto Yahoo. I know there are alot of frowns on using Yahoo as a server for hosting OSC but I have had Yahoo for a while now and would like to keep it for now until my ecommerce business decides to grow out of control.

Just wanted to know if anyone here successfully loaded OSC onto yahoo?

Do a search for yahoo in the forums and you should be able to see the members who have posted yahoo problems and the problems they have had. Personally I think you are asking for trouble but good luck.

The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing.

Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems?

There are many very useful osC Contributions

Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here

BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right??

I did a search on Yahoo.com, Yahoo and found a very small few set of people trying to do this but still have not seen or heard if anyone has been successful. I read some issue some are having trying to install on Yahoo but still curious if anyone on here as had any success. I really like how OSC is layed out and set up. Ive seen really nice and functional sites using OSC and would like to also use it for myself but I currently have Yahoo for my host and they have taken care of me so far. My ecommerce site for now is small so dont want to spend too much money on hosting and services.

If you are intent upon using Yahoo then Good Luck - you'll need it. I'm sure they're fine for general run-of-the-mill hosting, and they entice people with low prices and high bandwidth and webspace allowances (most of which they'll never need), but they are not ideal for hosting osCommerce websites.

My guess is that most people give up and either choose different hosting or choose a different shopping cart. You are going to have a problem on yahoo with any site or cart that uses a database and php. If you have a static html site then yahoo should work for you no problem but for dynamic sites that use a mysql database you are going to have problems.

Any sever that causes you to take more than an hour to install osC should be rethought and it really should not take that long. There are plenty of hosting companies that will not make you spend the time and energy getting and keeping your store up that you should really be spending on making your store better and helping your customers.

Since you already have a Yahoo hosting account, nothing would be lost except your time if you tried this. This would also be a good learning experience for you. If you decide you like oscommerce but cannot get it to work on Yahoo, you will already be up to speed on what you need in the way of a hosting company to switch to. Yahoo says they provide mysql and PHP at all account levels, this meets the requirements for oscommerce.

So long as you have backup's of your existing site and any database, and create a separate database for oscommerce and put/keep it in it's own subfolder, you should be set to try and experiment with it.

The biggest problems you will need to overcome in getting oscommerce to work are differences in the configuration of PHP, such as register_globals and register_long_arrays.

I did not see anything on Yahoo (did not spend much time looking) but having either a shared or dedicated SSL certificate will be a concern and requires the cooperation of the hosting company to install. If you already have SSL working for your existing ecommerce site, you don't need to do anything further, except get oscommerce configured to use SSL.

Hope these comments actually Help...

P.S. I see that Yahoo does offer shared SSL certificate and they mention password protection on areas of your web site, which leads me to believe their hosting is Windows based. Using password protection (they probably call this a secure folder) for the admin area of oscommerce is a necessity as the current version of oscommerce does not include this feature.

Thanks for all the replies and help on this matter. This really helps me out alot. Now I can just determine if I should just go with a new host or use the Yahoo store for now. Would be nice to have OSC working on Yahoo though. Guess for now I will just load OSC on my pc, work with it to where I want it to look than once is the way I want it, then try a new hosting service and just load the OSC at that point.

Just sucks that yahoo as big as they are do not accompany such shopping carts.
