kroll
Greetings all :) Does anyone have an opinion on what is the best text editor to use for editing the PHP files? Currently I am using Notepad, however it does not display the text to my liking. So if you have a favourite editor that is freeware I would be very happy to hear from you. ♥Vger
There are two I can recommend - Crimson Editor and Text Pad, both are free downloads, Crimson Editor is Feeware while Text Pad is Shareware and comes with a nag screen to register. However, the Find In Files feature of Text Pad is far superior to the same feature in Crimson Editor - so worth the nag screen (IMO). Vger
safoo
There are many that forum members have recommended. Search "php editor" and you should be able to find the threads. I prefer Ultraedit, though it is not shareware.

Wendy James
Tons of sites out there that offer free software and a whole bunch of great free php editers... Keep in mind that a lot of html editers can also handle and edit php. Wendy James Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. GraphicsGuy
Like Nick, my vote goes to MPSoftware's PHP Designer 2005. Rule #1: Without exception, backup your database and files before making any changes to your files or database. Rule #2: Make sure there are no exceptions to Rule #1. mylane
I'm using macromedia dreamweaver MX :) works good for me! Birds with same feathers, are same birds.
tarheit
I use HAPedit. It does php, asp, javascript, html, etc. as I'm sure most of the others do. It's small, free, and has a fair number of tools to help if you aren't familiar with html, etc. -Tim
Guest
I've been using ConTEXT for years. It's Free & easy (bit like myself) - similar to phpEdit. BrianD
trogette
I've been using ConTEXT for years. It's Free & easy (bit like myself) - similar to phpEdit. BrianD I mostly use ACEhtml, but use context when I need to check matching braces/brackets. I think it's a question of downloading a few and seeing which you like the look of. jasonabc
Macromedia Homesite is the best editor I've ever used for both client side and server side coding. Guest
If your checking out editors, IMO you need to have a look at Jedit. As a programmers text editor, it has produced every feature I could have ever wished for. Plus the plugins, context highlighting, and in its latest incarnation, error reporting. Great for someone like myself who tends to forget that comma I needed to add on line eleventy-umpteen-thousand, and would spend a week looking for otherwise. dynamoeffects
I've been using Notepad++ for a long time, but Jedit's error reporting sounds mighty good. Still, why don't any of these editors have the ability to find and replace blocks of text? That seems like such an obvious feature that everyone overlooks. Please use the forums for support! I am happy to help you here, but I am unable to offer free technical support over instant messenger or e-mail.
dynamoeffects
I just tried jEdit and all I was able to accomplish was generating errors. Clicking on "Choose notepad file" -- error. Trying to install plugins -- multiple errors. I'll give it a shot again when it's a little more well rounded, but for now, you Notepad++ whips it in both lightness and stability. All the ones I've tried have find and replace in the edit menus  It only works on open files though.
techguy20
Use Dream Weaver or PHP designer! They are very good. I use dreamweaver.
chooch
I didn't know dreamweaver can be used a text-diff editor! I've been using dreamweaver mx for years. Many people swear by filezilla, it's mean't to be very good and so is winmerge Upon receiving fixes and advice, too many people don't bother to post updates informing the forum of how it went. Until of course they need help again on other issues and they come running back! Why receive the information you require in good faith for free, only to then have the attitude to ignore the people who gave it to you? There's no harm in saying, 'Thanks, it worked'. On the contrary, it creates a better atmosphere. CHOOCH
bobsi18
Just my 2 cents... I'm using Smultron on a mac, and I love it (highlights all the right stuff, very fast, integrates with my ftp program etc etc). ~barbara~
