Hello

I am new to osCommerce & to buliding a web site. I have downloaded the files & unzipped them. I am not sure if I can only see the shop & amend it for my purposes after I have uploaded it to my host, or if I should be able to see it all off line & before I have uploaded? I was told once I uploaded to my web address it would be live & so customers would be able to see the template.

I'm sorry for being such a novice & I wish we did more IT at school now!

You can, if you want, have this running on your local development computer. If you don't already have this, you would need to find and install a web server, mysql, and PHP (there are install packages you can search for that do most of this for you.) You may not want to go through this much trouble. The advantage of doing this is you can experiment and learn at your own convenience. The disadvantage in doing this is you will eventually want to have your store live on the Internet and you will have to do much of the work a second time. The methods used to create databases and upload files differ between a local computer and a remote host, so you will end up learning two sets of methods. Another disadvantage is that there will be configuration differences between a local computer and your host. It is better to get this working on your host once, then get it working on a local computer and do it again on your host.

It is true that once you place this on your host at your web address anyone can visit it, but if this is a new web address, no one will be aware of it. Oscommerce is typically installed in a folder /catalog/ off of the root web address and there is a link on the main web page taking you to the store. Without such a link, no one will be aware of the store and you can make changes and test it by browsing directly to the proper web pages...
