Merry Christmas to one and all!!!

:D

I am totally new to Os Commerce and need a little help to begin.

The Os Commerce Catalog was installed onto our web server, but we have been unable to access most of the files. We are getting an error message that says: Cannot open file. Reason: Could not download file (550:FTP: Access denied).

Can someone tell us where to begin with Os Commerce. Do you begin to do your set up with the files on your server, or should you download the files to a local folder on your computer and then upload the pages you've adjusted?

Is there a step-by-step guide for beginners who have never used Os Commerce before?

If someone can give us some initial set up pointers that would be great!!!

All the best for the Christmas season!

You can't edit the files on your serve unless you use your hosts file manager or if you have an editor that will allow that. So the usual procedure is download a file to your computer, edit it and then upload it. Before you do all of that though, your shop should be working. If it was installed through your host, then it should be working. Are you saying it isn't? Is that why you are trying to edit the files?

Have you actually installed osCommerce, or just uploaded the files to the server.

Is PHP installed on the server?

If you look at the top left of the homepage you'll find a link to the Introductory Tutorial. You only need to understand the very basics of what it is.

Hello Jack,

Our host has placed a folder called catalog onto our web site server. The shop is working but it is not configured for our products. I have not been able to figure out how to make changes to what is appearing in the shop window at the moment. I thought that probably we would make the adjustments to the files themselves and then upload them. Is this correct?

We use the Creative Suite CS2 program called Go Live to make changes to our website.

On another note, when we open up the files in Go Live all we get is a basically empty form with ?php? written in all of the boxes. What does ?php? mean?

Thanks for your help,

We asked our host company to install Os Commerce for us. They wrote back saying it was done and that we would find a folder called 'catalog' on our server. There is a shop at this address that is working, but it is not configured with our products etc.

I do not know what PHP means sorry - complete computer nerd here!!! (Beware!) lol

You need to go to the main osCommerce website at www.oscommerce.com and download the PDF file of the Knowledge Base for osCommerce MS2. This will tell you what you need to know to get started.

You add products to your osCommerce shop via the admin control panel, which would be at http://www.yourdomain.com/catalog/admin

Thanks for your reply.

When I type in http:yourdomain/catalog/admin the following message appears:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access/catalog/admin on this server

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
