Harleypete40 Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 Hi all, I have been looking through the forums here and I think this is the right place to put this question. I have just started up my link exchange and getting along quite well with it. The question I have got is: What gives the best result towards a search engine bot / spider / crawler? A baner link or a text link? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and best regards Peter
Chance Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 Link exchanges kinda suck, but if you are going to do it then descriptive anchor text links work better. For example, if you have a widget store at www.widgetstore.com, "Best Widgets Online" or "Buy Widgets Cheap" or "Custom made hand-painted Widgets" text links would work better than a plain "Widgetstore.com" link. And you should vary your anchor text from site to site- do "Buy Widgets Cheap" on one site, and "Buy Widgets Online" on another. My advice comes in two flavors- Pick the one that won't offend you. Harleypete40 Posted December 20, 2005 Author Posted December 20, 2005 Hi, I kind of agree with that statement, coz it takes a lot of work and the benefits are not immedialtely visible. But the BUT here is that after reading up quite lot on SE rankings it becomes apparent that big ones like google do put a lot of importance towards incoming links. As I have posted in a previous post on here, at MSN I come first for my target keywords, but at the same time I have got no ranking at all at google. Therefor the link exchange. Regards, Peter

Regards, Peter Yes incoming links are important for google rankings but all links are not created equal. If the link going to your shop is from an unrelated site( one in a completly different line of business) then it does no good. If it is a link exchange such as you link to them and they link to you then it is given much less weight. A few good links are much better than a lot of poor links. You also have to be careful who you link to because if you link to link farms this will actually hurt your rankings and could get you delisted altogether. The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing.
