"Credit card number must be at least 16 characters long"

When checking out,

I get this error message even though I have selected American Express from the drop down list for the credit card to use:

 

"Credit card number must be at least 16 characters long"

 

I get this message when I choose AX, Visa, Mastercard, or Discovercard.

 

Can;t seem to get around this.

 

I am trying to accept AX, but no luck.

In admin>>configuration>>minimum values set the minimum credit card number length.
