You can use the dynamic-meta-tags-2.5 contribution for this.

hi.

well, it didn?t work. i tried to use that contribution... filled out the blanks.. the result: my site immediately FELL 30 positions in the google ranking!!

anyways that particular contribution felt a bit too complicated. i?m sure there must be an EASY ways of editing the metatags of the site... anyone know the answer to this : )?

I use header tags controller you can add what tags you desire for each product via the admin. The install, as far as contributions go, is fairly straight forward.

As for you dropping in google. I am sure this had nothing to do with your installing the other contribution. Not really fair to blame the contribution. Google only indexes sites every couple of weeks (more or less frequently depending on how many sites link to it) so changes to a site will take at least that much time to have any change in the rankings.

One surefire way of getting indexed better in google is to exchange links with other sites. This will surely give you better ratings, after a time.

Backup before making changes. Backup before making changes! Backup before making changes!!

You did do a backup? eh?

hi.

thanks for the advice so far.

i would feel most comfortable though, at least in the beginning, to use html-code for the meta tags. is there any way to do them in html and just pasting them in somewhere? i?ve already tried just simply pasting them in at the top of the php-code which obviously didn?t work. anyone knows : )?

perhaps i could just make an extra html-page which loads before the visitors reaches the store? what would be the dis/advantages of this : )?

You are trying to find an easy, comfortable way to solve the problem. All this will do will hurt your chances with the search engines. Some contributions are not easy to install but if you want the results, you have no choice. Using an entrance page is one of the worst things you can do to a site. Addng html tags, as you suggested, can be done for some of the pages but will not work for your categories and products pages. Oscommerce uses dynamic code so a dynamic soluton is required to do it properly. If you want to handle your titles and meta tags properly, install Header Tags or cDyanmic Meat Tags and be done with it. Otherwise you are truly wasting your time.

What product are you selling exactly? I wasn't able to tell from the site.

Using Meta tags in HTML should not be any different than normal, just keep them within the <head> attribute.

Hi. thanks for all the tips.

i think i?m gonna go for this tip from buckeyecomputers. see i don?t want to do professional metatags for all the products at the moment - i just want a few keywords for the site in general, a few keywords that google can index. see what i mean? i don?t wanna fill in metatags for every single product, and i?d like to keep it as simply as possible. now, is buckeyecomputers correct? can i just insert a html-code with the meta-tags between <head> and </head>? and, the most important question, where can i find that code? i?m looking for the main code of the site, the one that begins like this:

<!doctype html public "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">

<html dir="LTR" lang="en">

<head>

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

when i say where can i find it, i mean that literally. in what part of the directory of the os-commerce on my web hotel can it be found? the catalog? the admin? i haven?t been using os-commerce for a while so i?ve forgot some of the essential stuff.

Yes, you can add them like that. It is almost useless but it will work. As for the location, it will be in catalog in the index.php file.

still, the metatags don?t work though. the title of the site when checked upon is still "oakleafnow.com" and not "Oakleaf Entertainment" as suggested by the metatags. (and the metatags don?t show up in google either, but i know that can take a while before they update the information).

i would really appreciate some info about this. i?ve followed the instructions and it still doesn?t work.

I agree with Jack what you are trying to do is almost pointless.

You should install "header tags controller" It works very well. Thousands of stores use it to great effect.

Backup before making changes. Backup before making changes! Backup before making changes!!

Hi,

I too wanted to have Meta-Tags and added the meta tags controller and have had great success with it, my only problem is the entrance page to my site is somehow being refreshed first. SO the search engines do not see my header tags or anything.

Maybe someone on the forum can help me.

My Men's underwear site is www.apollowear.com

the initial page shows up like this:

<html><head><meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="0;URL=https://www.apollowear.com/index.php?osCsid=da3a75c01b348bd4542aebc7e7a35b70"></head><body></body></html>

the susequent pages are fine after it refreshes.

<!doctype html public "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">

<html dir="LTR" lang="en">

<head>

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

<!-- BOF: Generated Meta Tags -->

<META NAME="Reply-to" CONTENT="[email protected]">

<META NAME="Description" Content="Stylish fashion underwear for men - Thongs, Briefs, Boxers, G-Strings, Jocks Underwear for today's man. ">

<META NAME="Keywords" CONTENT="underwear, thong, thongs, brief, briefs, boxer, boxers, bikini, bikini, gay underwear, mens underwear, men's underwear boxers, briefs, underwear, men underwear, sexy underwear, gay underwear, underwear">

<title>Apollowear - Underwear. Styles from Male Power, Koi Boy, 2(x)ist and more </title>

<!-- EOF: Generated Meta Tags -->

PLEASE PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!!

I appreciate it!

Thanks

Lee

You shouldn't be using that type of redirect. The SE's may punish you for it. If you can't, or don't want to, link directly to the shop, then you should set up a permanent 301 redirect.

The Header Tags Controller is perfect for meta tags.

Even though it gives you the opportunity to add meta tags and description for each category, subcategory, and product - you don't HAVE to fill in those fields.

You can just fill in the fields for your site in general.

However, filling in more fields would only help you in the long run.

If you downloaded the Header Tags Controller Contribution, it clearly explains which files to upload (brand new files) and which files to modify. Just read it's readme.txt file.
