Installation Difficulty

Maybe someone can help. I am not able to gain access to my database when installing OScommerce. I have set up everything correctly (as far as I can tell) and even contacted my hosting company - who said as long as the database user name and password are correct it should work). I have set up databases before successfully so I am fairly certain that the database and database user (and its access to the database) are set up correctly.

I am following the OScommerce instructions to:

Upload the files to the server in the folder "catalog"

Change the permission on the catalog/includes/configure.php file to 777

Set up the database which is horticul_catalog

Set up user for database which is horticul_catalog and a password and then

set permission this user to access the database (select all)

Then running OS commerce installation page:

Page 1:

Import Catalog Database: Yes

Automatic Configuration: Yes

Page 2

a.. Database Server: hostXXX.ipowerweb.com (put in XXX for security)

b.. Username: horticul_catalog

c.. Password: the password I set for the horticul_catalog user

d.. Database Name: horticul_catalog

e.. Persistent Connections: No (since it is a shared sever)

f.. Session Storage: database (since it is a shared server)

When I click continue I get the following message:

"Access denied for user: '[email protected]' (Using

password: YES)"

"If you require help with your database server settings, please consult your

hosting company."

-------

The OScommerce Knowledgebase article "Database Error Corrections" states the following about this error code:

"You will need to check with your hosting provider the username and password required to access the MySQL database and/or check the catalog/includes/configure.php and catalog/admin/includes/configure.php files for incorrect information."

Since I know that the username and password are correct are there any other suggestions?

The server runs:

mysql Ver 12.22 Distrib 4.0.16

perl, v5.8.3

PHP 4.3.11

I am not sure of the Operating system of the server since it is blank when I look it up on the vdeck panel.

Thanks for you assistance.

Peter

You might need to reset the permissions on the database. Some server companies have them restricted and you have to send in a request. Double check with ipower

Have you assigned the user to the database? If so then only three things can be incorrect.

database server ( have you tried using localhost?)

database name

username

So I would reenter all the info and try again.

The Knowledge Base is a wonderful thing.

Do you have a problem? Have you checked out Common Problems?

There are many very useful osC Contributions

Are you having trouble with a installed contribution? Have you checked out the support thread found Here

BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!! You did backup, right??

What actually happened is that there was a mystery word for the webserver that none of my documentation showed. I put in what my documentation said my sever name/address was:

Server: hostXXX.ipowerweb.com

Intead I needed needed to input

Server: localhost

I would never have guessed that if they hadn't told me.

Thanks for your help. Hope my experience will help others. I am up and running and adding modules now.

The user name that I used is the user that created the database

However how do you assign the user to the database, I have'nt found any documentation on this

Sorry a complet novice with this

It may already be assigned it depends on how it is setup with your hosting company. A lot of times it is a three part process, you create database, create user, assign user to database. You should be able to look in your hosting control panel and see if the user is actually assigned to the database and if not assign it.
