For most contributions the best way to do it is:

1. Make backup copies of all of the affected files in your store.

2. Make a backup of your database.

3. Use a tool like WinMerge (free, google it) to apply the changes to your files.

4. Use phpMyAdmin or any other mySQL front end supplied by your web hosting provider to apply any database changes.

5. Test everything. If it isn't working, you have the option of restoring your back copies.

An even better adaptation of this is to do all installations on a test storefirst. The test store can either be in an alternate location on your web server (if you are allowed more than one database), or it can be on your PC if you have installed Apache, PHP & mySQL on it. The test store should be identical to the live one. Then if it works as expected, you can just copy the altered files up to your live store and run the database update query on the live database.

Rule #1: Without exception, backup your database and files before making any changes to your files or database.

Rule #2: Make sure there are no exceptions to Rule #1.
