Upgraded program? Attributes: fill-in box?

Hi.

 

I've been searching through the posts and I've got a couple of questions. My version of oscommerce is a few years old. Is it possible to upgrade versions without having to re-install all of the products and attributes?

 

Also, in the attributes section, I want to have a fill-in box instead just a drop-down. Is that already part of the new version? Or if not, is there an easy install? If it's already answered, please direct me to the post. I searched and must be using the wrong terms because I can't find it.

 

I also read about using the URL safe version -- to enable it. In my version, it still says it's under development. I enable it to see what would happen and it just messed up my cart. (I undid it.)

 

I want to install the meta-tag contribution, but the only one I found said to 'run a SQL script'. What does that mean exactly?
