bad_lemming Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 My Store Google has been all throughout my site, yet it has only indexed the main page and the privacy policy for some reason. Could you guys who have a clue, as opposed to me who has none, and maybe see if anything pops out at you?
moonbeam Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 I too am no expert with SEO. I viewed the source of your index page to find no meta descriptions or meta keywords. That would certainly help you to get indexed. I use the header tags controller contribution to help me with my meta tags. Guest Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 google seems to favor sites with age. that's why you'll find a lot of junk at the top of the results and when you go to the site, it was last edited in 1998. seo strategies help, but overall i don't think they do all THAT much. i've seen oscommerce sites with no meta tags, improper title tags and dynamic url's rank quite high in the results i don't think anyone can give us a direct answer as to how we can shoot to the top of the results. depending on how much competition, cheater sites and other related sites are in your store's field, that greatly impacts where you show up. it isn't worth paying somebody for (some guy seo'ing your site). your best bet is to trial and error and see what works best for you
Jack_mcs Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 While the SE's are not forthcoming with their rules, getting a good position with the SE's is by no means trial and error. There are clear, easy to follow steps that have been mentioned on the forums many times before. One just has to follow them, properly, to get a good position. The one caveat to that would be that you have to pick your keywords using come common sense. I've seen many computer sites try to use computer as the main keyword. The competition for that word is far too great for a new site to attempt to use it. As to the op's question, install Header Tags as suggested, run the fill tags option included in it and that is all you need do for your products. Those pages will be properly optimized and, providing they are not be blocked somehow, will begin to show up in the SE listing within a month. bad_lemming Posted December 13, 2005 Author Posted December 13, 2005 My problem isn't getting a high ranking, it is getting indexed by google at all. On MSN, I am the number one listing for one of my keywords, on msn, not one of my (admittedly small) catalog is even listed.
Jack_mcs Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 You should verify that the pages are not being blocked by your robots files. How long have your products been on your site? The oldest page you have listed is Nov. 26th. If oyu site only started getting listed two weeks ago, it may be 2-3 months before you see other pages listed. bad_lemming Posted December 13, 2005 Author Posted December 13, 2005 I got listed probably 2 months ago now. Could my robots file block them from just the products? I can't check while I am at work, and I don't know much about robots.txt.
Jack_mcs Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 Yes, it could block just that page if that is how it is setup. However, it doesn't appear that you have one: Your robots file That won't cause this problem but you should have one. bad_lemming Posted December 13, 2005 Author Posted December 13, 2005 Thanks, I will look into it this afternoon. Another thought occured to me, could the session IDs be screwing google up?
Guest Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 there should be no sessions generated when a spider is present. It is the default behaviour of osc. There is a switch in the osc admin configuration->sessions to enable/disable sessions on spiders.
bad_lemming Posted December 13, 2005 Author Posted December 13, 2005 right, but I looked at my spiders txt and Idont' see anything about google in it, maybe it is another name?
Guest Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 I think comes on a different name. There is a contribution for the latest spiders.txt you could check vs what you currently have.
