New Products For December Question

I was wondering if it's possible to display random items from different categories in the "New Products For December" section?

 

On my site I have a display of 5 products across x 2 lines in that section, but everytime I refresh the page all of the items are coming from the same category. I've changed the "max" values in the configuration of the admin, but I still can't find what I may be doing wrong. I've also changed other "max" values but am still unable to get the results I need.

 

a. Is it possible for me to display different category items in that section at one time?

b. Why do the items display come from just 1 category only?
