Credit Card Payment: Surcharge

Hello there,

I want to offer credit card payment by using the payment module of the standard OsC 2.2 installation, but I want to raise an additional fee of 3 % of the goods' value for this payment method.

Does s.o. have an idea on how to realize that?

Thx in advance!

That's forbidden by most credit card companies. Check their terms and conditions.

It's also against the law in some places.

Raising prices a tad to cover your costs probably won't kill any significant number of your sales, but your 'price point' issue is well taken.

How about a Better Idea...

Why not offer DISCOUNTS for Other Payment Methods, like a direct payment to your company bank account? Processing is probably cheaper if done electronically, and anyway it is their cost, not yours, as your bank probably does not charge you for direct deposits (I hope...).

There are several Contributions which you can find listed to do just that kind of Direct Payment to Bank Account. There are several flavors...

Also, you will not have to think about cancelled sales / rolled back charges/ or credit card fraud cropping up months later (and the costs of paying back banks for their losses, as is usually the case).

Then you get a simlar effect and lower costs, and you can offer a DISCOUNT, which everybody likes to read about, even if they don't 'use the coupon,' so to speak!

Good luck! B)

In Australia a retailer may pass on the charges that we are charged to the customer. I am using the Paymate module atm, and Paymate allow me to charge the customer or to absorb the fees myself, hence it is not set in the module but with the provider.

Contact your provider and they might be able to lead you in the right direction.

Cheers,

I'm also looking for a way to add the surcharge using the module - in Australia the surcharge is permitted by law, and the surcharge is starting to become a standard add-on for online shopping, physical retailers, and even in restaurants. The "discount for cash" ruse is well recognised here as simply covering the cost of credit card transactions, and the surcharge is more transparent to the consumer who know what the "discount" actually is all about. I'm not sure of the legality, but I believe if the surcharge is passed on, the consumer must be advised that they are paying it. It would be kind of like offering a discount to out-of-state buyers in the US, to hide the fact in-state shoppers are paying sales tax, when by law you have to notify them of the sales tax amount.
