my3sons Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 Hi, We have been trying to set up a dedicated server for a few months with our server support guys and we've been having some problems with mod rewrite and .htaccess. This isn't my question, but rather is whether what we have been trying to accomplish is a good idea. I initally wanted the option to possibly add one domain in the future, so they set up the site at /home/site with virtual directory in Apache. I didn't want to pay extra for Plesk or CPanel, so they have been trying to get it setup without. We have had problems with authentication with mail and in directories. I need mod-rewrite, and a regular (not shared) SSL. Does a dedicated server mean dedicated to only one site? Should we be going with just a single domain in /var/www? and then get another server when we decide to do another domain? If we do a server reload and install Plesk or CPanel, will I have an issue with a root SSL cert? How is a dedicated server normally loaded up for a busy OSC site? Thanks! Scott

A dedicated server means that you have one "machine" alone , dedicated to your sites.... 2. A dedicated server igives you the possibilety to host as many sites as you like. 3. dedicated SSL certificates will be limited to the numbers of ip's you have available A BIG NOTE.... If you do not know "Diddly" about servers and/or server management choose a Managed Dedicated service..... In such a case, if you choose a un-managed plan..to make it short and sweet....you are fucked..lol Basics for osC 2.2 Design - Basics for Design V2.3+ - Seo & Sef Url's - Meta Tags for Your osC Shop - Steps to prevent Fraud... - MS3 and Team News... - SEO, Meta Tags, SEF Urls and osCommerce - Commercial Support Inquiries - OSC 2.3+ How To To see what more i can do for you check out my profile [click here]
my3sons Posted December 11, 2005 Author Posted December 11, 2005 Lol, yes I am using a managed dedicated server. I have built and maintain a few Linux servers for work but they are not eCommerce/multiple domain servers which adds several dimensions I am not familiar with. So it looks like even though I might not have over one domain, but with keeping the possibility open for more, I should have not been so cheap and just paid the extra money for Plesk. Seems like a waste, but paying for a server each month that we aren't using is a pretty big waste also. Is it really that difficult to set up multiple domains, mail, etc without a server panel? The guys managing mine seem to be having a tough time of it, and they are a well respected outfit. Thanks again.
♥toyicebear Posted December 15, 2005 Posted December 15, 2005 A control panel makes it a much easier task.....in addition to Plesk , you might also look at: C-panel, WebAdmin and Ensim.
