personalising oscommerce with contributions?

Hi all

Im new to oscommerce and have just installed it for the 3rd time as have been trying to personalize it (this is where it went wrong) or at least make it a little different what contributions do you recommend?.

I have seen a STS that looks good but it looks like a headache to install if you have installed the register globes patch. Any info or help on this or any other recommended contributions would make me sooooo happy as
