goddamit! GBP currency sets all my prices to 0!!!!!!!

hope someone can help!

 

when i set up the new currency of GBP and set it as default, all the prices in my store go to 0.

 

if i change back to USD the prices are displayed correctly.

 

if, when all the prices appear 0, i go through the shopping cart and end up at paypal, the total to be billed is correct for the contents of the shopping cart.

 

i can't have a hybrid currency of USD code and a "?" sign, because my currency code has to be GBP for the paypal gateway to work correctly!

 

any advice on this greatly, greatly appreciated!
