Newbie, can't edit files

I have looked through some of the information and have a nice little guide for changing a few things but, I can't edit files. When I click on edit it opens the file but I can't change anything.

when you say you can't change anything, are you opening it with note pad and it appears to be on one line. If so i had this when i first started, opening it with frontpage seems to structure the code properly

Well I just clicked on the file and then clicked on the edit button on the right. If I choose open then I get a message saying that the file doesn't exist, do I want to create one? It is opening in Notepad. I don't have any software needed on this computer and my laptop doesn't have network at the moment...grr

 

just noticed the permissions error at the top. I have changed this for images. Do I need to do other folders then?

Hello again, I have used ftp to change the permissions of eg, the english.php and using another compuer, still connected direct to the server to edit the file but, am still getting permissions problems... can anyone help?
