Cart not updating with cookies option

I recently enabled the force cookies option in an effort to restore a session after diverting to a payment gateway. However now I can't add anything to the cart or log in. The session id is being written to the cookie, I checked. What else could I check to find out what the problem is? Is there another setting that needs changing?

If you have recently implemented or changed your SSL then this problem may be Cookie Path related. Check the HTTP and HTTPS Cookie paths in your config.php to make sure they are correct for both realms.

Is this the same file as configure.php In here both HTTP and HTTPS paths are set the same to the domain name (in my case subdomain.domain.co.nz) . Do you think there is any issue with doing this on a subdomain?
