After a lot of reading on here got it sorted.

Sessions as default tried to use the /tmp directory on the server, in most remote hosting cases you don't have acces to this.

Solution

Create a new directory in catalog say sessions

Then in admin / configuration / sessions set the session directory to point to it, you will need the full path, for example /home/birchservuk/public_html/catalog/sessions

Thanks to all who contribute on here - wouldn't have got there without you

Mark :D
