Missing buttons in 2.2

Hi,

I'm new to all this so please bear with me...

 

I had loads of trouble with losing contact with images kept in includes/languages/buttons. After much searching around I found several other people with the same problem, but the workarounds supplied didn't work for me (I'm not totally keen on deleting my .htacces file).

 

As suggested previously I tried adding 'limit' to my main/root directory AllowOverride directive but this didn't help either (although I haven't taken it out). I have found that adding

 

<File *.gif>

Order Allow,Deny

Allow from all

</File>

 

into my .htacces file in the includes directory allows me access to the images without removing the security from the folder.

 

Is this a good idea or have I just done something really stupid?

 

I'm running (if it's useful!)

OsCommerce 2.2ms2

Apache 1.3.26

PHP 4.1.2

MySQL 3.23

Linux 2.4 Debian 3.0r3
