shopping cart empties when i try and checkout using shared SSL

Hi,

 

My cart works great, but when I goto to checkout on my shared SSL, it empties. But if I click on a link to go to a new category which is off the SSL, the contents of the cart come back. Then i try and checkout, and they disappear again. I can't figure out whats wrong. I'd really appreciate some help. I may have to forget about SSL for now but I don't want to.
