This is probably going to sem like a very silly question if you know the answer but should I install osCommerce in an https or http folder? I know that one is 'secure' and the other is not but my global understanding is somewhat limited in terms of the pros and cons and consequences.

Can you please enlighten me?

Hi Steve.

HTTPS is not a folder, it is a protocol that ties into SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) on port # 443 (default). It is used for secure connections on the ceckout pages of an e-commerce websites and others of course, but that is one of the main uses.

You can just download OSCommerce to your root file system (C: for example) and then copy and paste the "catalog folder" into the directory that will serve as the website. Look for something like: wwwroot, www, public_html. Those are where you can put the catalog.

Cons: Using HTTPS means you will want to purchase a certificate from a company like Verisign to prove that your site is 100% secure.

Cons: This is not cheap either, and it is not open source. I think it can cost close to a $1000 (U.S.), it might be less.

Cons: Technically you can just create a generic one, but your visitors will see warning messages about the certificate.

Pros: Makes your site look very professional and legit

Pros: Customers/Clients feel a little more secure about providing personal information (like a credit card number).

Hope this helps.

Install to the http directory and ask your host to add a symlink for the https directory.
